Although many people believe that Salsa originated from Cuba, the truth is that it was born in New York by emigrants from Puerto Rico and Cuba in the 1930s. The term "Salsa" for the dance means hot sauce in Spanish, and it was adopted to the dance in New York as well. This dance has a mixture of Latin American countries such as Cuba and Afro- American roots. This dance is also know for involving sensual movements between the couple dancing. Even the costumes for women do not have much to cover. Women wear a short bright color dress which is wealthy on sequins. The common dress for this dance looks more like a bikini top with a skirt. Men on the other hand take more calmly the clothing for the dance since they do not want to opaque their dance partner. Men utilize fitted pants, sometimes black, others white or other colors; the shirt regularly is the same color of the dress their partner is wearing. Women commonly use dance heels of 4 inches while men use dress shoes.
